A similar exhibit, dedicated to the Time of the Russians at Tubabao opened on November 8 at the Solzhenitsyn House of Russians Abroad in Moscow.  Philippine Ambassador Correto attended and gave a very warm speech, as did representative Nicholas Brown from the Political Department of the U.S. Embassy in Russia, Tatiana N. Smirnova from the Department of Work with Compatriots of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in addition to Director of the House Of Russians Abroad, Victor A. Moskvin and Natalie Sabelnik, President of the Congress of Russian Americans and Chair of the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots of the US, who was the initiator of these exhibits.    Following viewing of the documentary film (which was translated into Russian by N. Sabelnik, as it was being shown, as part of the film festival that opened the evening before), the exhibit opened on the top floor and will run until the end of the year.

On November 17, as part of commemoration of “Russia Unity Day”, and the closing of the exhibit in San Francisco, Consulate General of the Russian Federation in San Francisco held a special reception with photographs from each exhibit – in San Francisco and in Moscow.  Russian Consul General Sergey V. Petrov and Philippine Consul General Henry S. Bensurto Jr. both spoke of the Tubabao as being an important part of history that showed how Philippine & US nations worked together to provide a temporary home for 6000 displaced Russian refugees, and served as a monument to working together in tandem.   Both Consul Generals thanked Natalie Sabelnik for initiating this project to remind all of the necessity to work together in this year commemorating 40 years of Russia-Philippine relations. Consul General Bensurto said that during it’s first week, the exhibit was viewed by over 1000 people.   Yves Franquien, from the Museum of Russian Culture SF, who recently returned from Moscow, handed a proclamation of gratitude to Natalie Sabelnik from Director Victor Moskvin of the Solzhenitsyn House of Russians Abroad.

In her speech, Natalie Sabelnik thanked all who participated in the project, the sponsors who helped financially, both Russian & Philippine Consulates who provided venues and support for this project, the Museum of Russian Culture of SF, that provided around 300 photographs from Tubabao, and the former Tubabao residents, who sent in numerous photographs, documents and other artifacts to make this Tubabao project a success.  She said that “now, it is not just my project, my life, not just your life, of those who lived in Tubabao camp, but our project, our life, because we all shared in this historical event this year.”
_vgn7969
N.Sabelnik also acknowledged the participation of the grandson of President Elpidio Quirino and grandchildren of Gregory Bologov, president of the Russian Emigrants Association, and granddaughter of Alexander Karamzin, the prolific artist of Tubabao paintings and icons of the church in Tubabao  for their participation in all the Tubabao events in San Francisco.

In all of the exhibits-receptions dedicated to the Tubabao project, the Russian, Philippine and US Embassies stated that this exhibit was one of the leading projects that cemented Russia-Philippine-US relations this year.

“Taste of Russia” festival

October 27, 2016 By cra-eb

Congress of Russian Americans was one of the sponsors of the Holy Virgin Cathedral’s annual “Taste of Russia” festival, held at the cathedral on Sunday, October 9, 2016.

unnamed-1

This year marked the 10th anniversary year of the festival, and while there were so many other activities going on throughout the city of San Francisco, e.g. the Blue Angels at the Embarcadero, a concert in Golden Gate Park and a beautiful Indian summer day for the beach, the attendance reached well over 500, and brought many Russophiles to attend the festival.   In addition to traditional Russian food, such as pirozhki, borscht, pelmeni, beef stroganoff, a barbeque was prepared of shashlik or tri-tip in the cathedral yard, as well as an assortment of gourmet desserts was available.   The Russian American Women’s League, also one of the sponsors, was selling an array of souvenirs, crystal, silver, jewelry and miscellaneous gifts; all proceeds went to benefit the Holy Virgin Cathedral.  CRA, annually, in addition to promoting the festival, assembles the entertainment for the festival, and Natalie Sabelnik, CRA President MC’s the event.  This year, Russian entertainment of song, dance and music, included Sivka Burka Cossack Children’s Choir, Rossinca Dance Group from San Jose, Kalinka Women’s Folk Choir from Sacramento, Russian Center Folk Dance Ensemble and Massenkoff Russian Folk Festival featuring Nikolai Massenkoff with back-up singers and musicians.  Nikolai Massenkoff was awarded this year’s Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots of the US (KSORS) award for his outstanding contribution to the preservation of Russian culture.

ON PROPOSED FORT ROSS CLOSURE

June 5, 2009 By cra-admin

ON PROPOSED FORT ROSS CLOSURE.

For immediate release:

(June 5, 2009) As part of California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s, “restructuring plan” to balance the state budget, Fort Ross, the picturesque and venerable symbol of Russian America in California has been earmarked for closure. Together with other state parks, it is now destined for the financial “chopping block”. Fort Ross is a designated National Historic Landmark and was established by Ivan Kuskov of the Russian American Company. It was the hub of the Southernmost Russian settlements in North America during the years 1812 to 1841. The Congress of Russian Americans, a heritage organization, is understandably alarmed with this latest development. We are concerned that the proposal to close Fort Ross is penny-wise and pound foolish. It will be another blow undermining California’s rich diversity in the historical mosaic that has always been one of California’s greatest assets. What message will it send to the community at large? While the financial crisis is real and urgent steps are necessary to mitigate it, closing state parks, which are a “living testament” to our past history as a nation, is the wrong course to take. If anything, during these troubled times, Californians need even more time to reflect and what better place is there for them to do so than at our beautiful, scenic and historic parks. Governor Schwarzenegger! We appeal to you to re-consider your park closure plan and work with other cost-reducing options that will save our beloved Fort Ross, as well as the other state parks currently on the closure list. Long range, we are sure that this will be the right and proper decision for our state. The Congress of Russian Americans is the leading, ethnic, Russian-American national organization, established in 1973 and headquartered in San Francisco. Its primary goals include the preservation of Russian spiritual and cultural heritage, protection of the civil rights of Russian Americans, fighting Russophobia, as well as serving as a bridge to foster friendly relations between Russians and Americans.
