The Russian Orthodox Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Washington DC, founded in 1949 by St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco commemorated their 75th anniversary on Sunday, September 8, 2024.
The services were celebrated by Metropolitan Nicholas, the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia and Metropolitan of Eastern America and New York, co-served by various bishops, rector of the church, Father Victor Potapov, other local and visiting clergy, accompanied by jubilant singing by the parish choir
A banquet, traditional and magnificent feast was held with members of the parish and guests in an atmosphere of joy and spiritual unity. Metropolitan Nicholas, Father Victor, clergymen and guests delivered warm words of greeting and long-time active volunteers of the parish were presented with Proclamations. In addition to other clergymen and guests, CRA’s Washington DC representative, Xenia Woyevodsky, read a congratulatory letter from the CRA President, commenting of the many years, that the various dedicated priests had served the spiritual needs of the congregation.. The letter went on to mention that their parish actively sponsored and participated in numerous cultural, charitable and social activities, as well as supported various humanitarian projects. The Sunday school at the parish and the work with various youth organizations, including the Russian Scout organization, St. George Pathfinders are an invaluable part of preserving the spiritual and cultural heritage of our Russian-American children and youth.CRA is especially proud of our long-standing association and commitment to the Washington DC chapter and specifically the parish. CRA congratulated Father Victor, the clergy, Starosta, choir members, sisterhood and the entire congregation on the 75th anniversary with best wishes to all for good health, spiritual happiness, prosperity and peace for Many, Many Years!
